I just had a weird wish to join 'The Three Ninjas' and be on their adventures and go 'ayaaa' in the face of the bad people. hmmmm.
OTher than that ... work has been going on sooo slowly. I been coding on a simple thing for three days. Maybe its not sooo simple after all. Mixed the old with the new, discarded some of the old. Working from scratch is probably easier than modifying stuff.

The weather is pretty gloomy today... and I was listening to a little compilation I made for myself of blues music. Then Johnny Lang's 'Look out my window' kept ringing in my head since it kept saying "Look out my window.. is it still raining?". I am sitting right in front of the window in my office from where i can see the trees swaying in the strong winds outside! So it made good sense that this song should stick in my head. But, somehow i remembered "Thunder flash of lightning very very frightening..." of Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. And now the different portions of this song (since i can't recall the whole of it.. or the exact sequence of it... ) are whats playing on Radio Tanm.

Recently we took a trip to cox's Bazaar courtesy of our office. I was pretty skeptical about it ending well.. but i was wrong. It went fine and we all had a lot of fun. We stayed two days in a big hotel named Sea Gull and enjoyed their private beach. The waves on those two days were massive, and we really drained out all our energy by wrestling with it. The third day we shifted to a cheaper hotel and headed out with two vehicles to see Himchori and Inani. Everyone returned the next day to Dhaka ...well almost everyone. I went to Chittagong to see familia, and two others did the same to see their chacha and fupis. The whole thing is also on four hours of video tape, but now i need to figure out a way to get it onto CD. I miss the beach.

A hot day in the office. Under an a/c that is exhaling warmth onto me..I am going crazy. If not for the fact that we have a holiday starting from tomorrow... I'd be at a level requiring professional help.
Hopefully, we will jam tomorrow and, hopefully the new guy for vocal tryout will be there.
On saturday night we will head for Cox's Bazaar.

Black was in an accident while coming back from Chittagong after performing for the Djuice promo.
Miraj and Tony are in a hospital here. Jon and Jahan are apparently in Chouddogram waiting for the release of Mobin bhai's corpse. The most fatal blow was his. As far as i know, Tahsan, Jon and Jahan are unharmed.
The funny thing is that GP had the rest of the performing artists (The indian idol bunch and Miles) flown in an airplane to Dhaka!

I read a book by this name in my first year at university. I suddenly remembered this while throwing darts with friends since this book had an analogy of dartboards and.... nevermind. It was a funny book written by none other than Jerry Seinfeld. I managed to find a site which has excerpts from it.

I am sure everyone heard the expression "Mog-er mulluk!". Who or what were these Mogs? I only hazily remember being told that they were a tribe or society that was very unruly and unmanageable. Did they all live in 'Mog'bazaar?

There is a new book shop in town and its all yellow. Its called Words n' Pages and is two-stories high. Has a lil' cafe upstairs, whose occupants may be seen from outside through the large window (the table of the cafe is by the window).
When i went in, i was surprised by how many books they had by Indian writers! Usually that will not be a surprise since Indian literature is very popular here. I am talking about children's books, comics, travel books, history books written in English. Later a friend who joined me there confirmed my hunch of the store being owned by Indians. Kudos to them for setting up a nice shop like that!
What really hooked me that night was the comic books they had - (DC, Marvel...) Superman, Justice League, Batman, Thundercats and more. Since i was very into these things during my school years, i got nostalgic and bought a bunch of them for my cousin Nil whose birthday was approaching. I was amazed to see that the penciling and drawings for these comics were done in India! So now DC has an office in Mumbai where the comics are made locally! The Indians have a lot to teach us which we overlook (possibly due to the weight of their other import - Bollywood), and this is also true for Malaysia. These two countries have made leaps in past decades and they have done so by gathering investment and building industries there. Anyway, it was also kinda funny to see an ad in one of the comics of an indian version of spiderman wearing a white pajama and nagra! Talk about localization!
I came home happy with my purchases that night. Also the experience of walking through shelves filled with books was kinda calming. I had bought about 10 comics that night and the prices were either taka 30 or 50 (thickness wise). This I thought was ok since most indian books sell here for double. But later I saw in fine print below the place where it was written 'Rs. 15', the letters:
'Bangladesh: Tk. 18'
!!! I felt very cheated. The one that cost taka 50 had 'Tk. 30' on it! Is this legal?

I got this incredible album from cousin fokla a few days ago. The title is that of my post, and it has a compilation of a lot of guitar players playing acoustic guitars. I must admit when looking through the list I could only recognize Eric Johnson's name. But the last track I just heard really blew me away. I can tell the guitar was a 12-string acoustic. The player's name is Dan Ross, and I think I just found out what might be the possibilities with my 12-string! I should get new strings though to achieve what he did with the slapping technique!

In recent times some of the language in Daily Star and its offshoots are not settling well with me. E.g., the Star Weekend Magazine has a piece on Folk Music and the Fusion music that has come up surrounding it. There they have a picture of Anushey the vocalist of the very talented band simply named "Bangla". Below the picture the captions describe her voice as "Throaty and Husky"! Is that right? I don't really know what 'THROATY' sounds like, but HUSKY is definitely NOT for Anushey. It might suite the co-writer herself (Miss Elita) perfectly, but its just not imposable on Anushey.

I was watching the movie The New Guy (again) last night and it occurred to me that the guy doing the main role could be perfect for 'Jughead' if ever The Archies were to be made into a movie!!!
Also i think the guy sometimes look like Tahsan. Yes, they have one thing in common.. they both have the goofy look. :)

'coma' not 'comma' ok? Just so you don't make the mistake I made. This is the band of my next door neighbor from Melaka (Malaysia). Bukit Beruang. He and I played once and he borrowed my amp a trillion times. A very talented musician. This is his band and hope the people out there will give them a try.

Went to a new restaurant last night, named Casa Greek (read: Greek home). Eating out was inevitable ..since there was no food at home.. and while on the way to somewhere else... we picked this place up.
Below are some photos. One even of the salaad we had. The main course could not be photographed because of the speed with which it was devoured! It was Fillet Mignon and rib steak.
It was a nice place, and the service the waiters offer are also very good. The only hiccup was the high prices. But who knows... this might be the closest we'll ever come to Greece :).

In the morning me and Rubaiyath went to look for apartments in the Baridhara DOHS area. While doing so we were thinking of how it would be to have a reality show about bachelors looking for flats to rent. Have a bunch of bachelors, and a married couple go through one area by one and recording what goes on.
In the afternoon, during jummah prayers the imam was talking about the virtues of honest labor/work/earning. How we should have intergrity in the way we earn our living. He also touched the topic of moderation in our quest for wealth. He urged people to try and avoid earning too much in excess of what is sufficient for living. I wondered then how much of this teaching is actually registering between the ears! Dhaka while being the city of mosques does not have much to show for the virtues of its citizens. Even my parents would probably be surprised if I were to say to them that I think I have the kind of pay that is enough for me to survive this life and save enough for retirement. The truth is that ambition and ideas of a 'fine' lifestyle has been sold to us. Competing in society with your next door neighbor is now a 'neccessity'. Then comes the way to justify high earnings by spending towards helping the needy, the orphans/orphanages, helping the society with the money earned. That should be an incentive to earn more rather than an urge to have the most expensive watch or car!
At night I attended the wedding reception of one of the guys I knew from Malaysia. Its amazing how Xindian gets business! While some chinese restaurants have trouble filling .. say 10 tables... these guys fill up 4 floors quite often! And thats not all! The owners of Xindian apparently have restaurants all over Dhaka! Anyway, I donno why since the food was nothing exceptional!!! The place is fine... decorations were also not that extraordinary. I, in fact, hate the dim lightings of chinese restaurants!

VOA radio is now playing on 97.6 FM every morning (from what i heard between 9 am and 12). Its pretty nice since i got a phone now with a radio. This helps out sometimes during those long bus rides from one place in Dhaka to another and beyond.
Rubaiyath and I are pretty concerned about the lives we are leading. We slave away in our offices through long hours and the whole thing is now somehow engrained to our selves. I know for certain that now even if I do get a chance to get out at 5 pm, I feel weird about it! I just don't want to go out there, like a vampire scared of daylight. But sometimes, in the morning, I do feel like skipping work. I know once I am in, I will be right at home, and maybe thats the whole point of not wanting to go.
Meanwhile Rubaiyath, Mosha and their venture called Muzaq is now handling a marketing campaign of Advanced Development Technologies. He showed me two of the 10 second videos they produced. The concepts were very good... Nothing less would be expected from these friends of mine... such talent and genuis! so proud of you guys. But I must admit when Mosha first told me his ideas, i visualized it a bit differently. The animations were done by a 2nd year student of IBA! Surely many of the parents of current 20 year olds had a hard time coping with words like 'cool' and 'phatt'. And now there is a new one on the block. It spells S I C K!

Recently, I went to a discussion held by an organization named Liberated Youth. The discussion was on the present plight of youth, especially muslim youth. They made a claim in the beginning that the youth is the 'Critical Mass' of the population whereby they hold the power and intelligence to make wrongs right and bring about large changes socially, politically... etcetera ecetera.
When I told some of the guys about this discussion I have been to, and the fact that Liberated Youth happends to be a sub faction of another organization that is Islam conscious, many claimed that they often 'brainwash' people! I have only been to one of these discussions, which was followed by and Q & A afterwards, and from that experience I can say that they were pretty rational, keen on promoting youth to be rational, to do something once they have thought clearly of the action, its consequences and its implications!
This scare is pretty widespread these days. Anything related to religion is scary. The people who talk about religion is scary and the organizations that pursue this subject are almost always implicated as brainwashers.
What struck me as ironic is the fact that little discussion I went to that night, was accusing the general portion of the youth as being brainwashed (not is exactly these words) by the media. Especially the exported entertainment, the music, the movies and the portrayals they carry of the youth and what their lifestyles is like. I mean really, if you see the world over, the youth of asia now dress like the youth on MTV (including yours truly) or Friends. But this is also nothing new. My dad and his generation used to be into bell bottoms and Elvis. I see people discarding culture for trends. Maybe its inevitable, but do we really stop and think about it?
I did agree beforehand with the issues that were raised that day. I don't particularly think the way we dress and carry ourselves matter much. However, to see the majority of the youth unconcerned about the poverty, illiteracy and the regular chaos of the city does bother me! It is true, being hip, having a phat ride (a car with spoilers and custom exhaust pipes and what else have you ...U know what you see in NFS), and whatnot...the 'bling bling' it has come to Dhaka, where exists palace like apartments surrounded by slums! Where are our heads these days!???

I am noticing a lot of people struggling with bicycles! As i recall, it used to be fairly easy to do! Is something causing people to lose their sense of balance :) ? Maybe they should first start with tricycles!

My amp is really letting me down with its recent bout of cold. all its sneezing and coughing is really chokin the sound of my ibanez ax 125! what am i to do!
i just returned from chittagong a few days ago.. and now i feel like 4 days of holidays there was just not enough!!! i still wanna lay idle and sleep endless hours for a few more days.. BUT c'est la vie... and c'est very cruel. The last day of enrolment is 4th of April ...so maybe i should get those french lessons. Or would german be more interesting? guten?
i finished The Da Vinci Code! round of applauses for me and flowers showering mysteriously from somewhere above. For this feat i feel ...the need to go back to NFS Underground 2 again as entertainment after work. TV is just soooo boring. It even has me thinking of getting internet hooked up at my apartment again! hmpf. more bills? is that what i need?
Fuad says he wants to buy a car! he doesn't care that he is months away from 'possibly' moving to Denmark! in case he does go.. this car wil mean extra costs, not to mention going back to being 'car'less! but he is afffixed... all he needs now (according to him) is the green signal from the authorities (parents).

A few days ago, one of my colleagues saw 'The Da Vinci Code' with me and took it for a while to check it out. The next day he came to me to tell me that the book was on the news! Apparently it had stirred up quite a controversy somewhere. Later I think I read the part which might have caused a storm. This book talks to a large part about the establishment of the church, how a real story about Jesus was fabricated and sometimes hidden and about the 'Holy Grail' (remember Indiana Jones and the last crusade?).
Anyway, another large focus of the book is on symbology. That is interesting at times, and at times just seemed like a farce. I mean the number 5, pentacles, pentagrams, etc... were fascinating at times and at times to think people would go to such lengths to code info at places did seem kind of obsessive.
I still haven't finished reading the whole yet.

I seemed to have taken back the reading habit again! I guess it depends on the book now. Guess, I'm a sucker for mysteries and thrillers.
Now my latest is The Da Vinci Code. One thing this book has managed to do is create a great urge to go and visit the Louvre museum in France! Its detailed descriptions and notes is responsible for this. Other than that, the descriptions of early paganism, the early church's actions against pagans and Leonardo Da Vinci's lifestyles and philosophies.. stuff like the Divine Proportion, symbology, and what not! its got me totally sucked in and when i am not reading this, i am probably going through the internet looking for all these concepts mentioned in the book!
But I am only halfway through... so whether I'll complete this one is yet to be seen!

Greatest stage ever built for a concert in BD so far. Biggest crowd? ...umm not sure. Great festive surroundings with stalls for art (no comments on the actual art in there), fashion and music. Especially the Sound Machine stall where people were free to jam on a drumset, guitar and bass!taht was kewl... considering some guys went there and really jammed out some goooodies. BUT! The sound of the mainstage sucked! uff.. that just stumped out all the goods, and the highs of the day! until Strings came out (the 3rd last event) this was the case. Junoon and Strings by the way, were there! : ) and then got dropped off by a helicopter in the middle of the field at midday! that was kinda kewl... but again.. they got to see our bands perform with horrible sound! hmpf.
Spotlight: Ajom Khan.. if this man can't dance.. nobody can! ;)
Also, couldn't stay through the whole of Junoon's set.

On the way to the place where we were to jam, Ishti and I did a lil calculation... we were on our way to a jamming session after 4 months! It was fun however rusty we might have all gotten, and however little of our songs we remembered. FUN. But i do have an aching arm now, and the other two has blisters on their fingers! :)

When buddy rubaiyath forwarded the idea for going to ampfusion, i rang up all the names and faces that were to appear there and said NO! but then he revealed to me that he heard that LRB and Black will be singing each other's songs! wow! that got me to change my mind in a jiffy, and soon enough i packed up and got ready for it.
Well, firstly, there was a past winner of B & H's Star Search talent hunts. She was ok, not my type of music.
Second in line was Habib, whose studio work didn't do anything for me. But his live performance that night was really something else... he did much more with the songs, he did much more for the songs. He should really think of including these elements in his studio recordings. Otherwise it makes really mediocre music, and that is not acceptable for someone with a study on music from the west. Apart from his good performance he also brought someone else on stage who was really good!!! A singer whose voice was sooooo goooooood that we all forgave him for his ridiculous head gear.
Then there was Kaniz Suborna, who was famous for what.. i did not understand. Anyway she came on with her happy schoolgirl romance music. The first one had a raggae vibe, which made it enjoyable even though I didn't get much of the lyrics. The crowd seemed to be divided into fans and 'not a fan's. Anyway, at the end of the second or third song the crowd, the same one that was dancing with all the joy in the world suddenly started shouting "bhua.. bhua.." (which seems to be a caual mantra these days at any concert and seems to not mean the original, which translates to "sucks"!!!). This sudden outburst really hurt the performer's feelings and she could be seen wiping tears off! she went on with her set still, putting a smile on her face! hmmm... quite the professional. Even Ayub Bacchu joined her onstage for one song.
Then there was Shahjahan Munshi. He was a blind man, wearing black shades, with the aura of a ray charles of the baul world. he tuned his do-tara (two-strings), bogie (from Renaissance) tuned his bass. Amidst the tuning they suddenly started their set! They even had a trumpet player named Gary. I felt sorry for Gary, they brought him on stage, but the band didn't leave any space for him to play along or for a little solo! how cruel! One could see Gary's awkwardness of the moment on stage! But Mr. Munshi... he was impressive nonetheless. the bass seemes off at times... but still the crowds here are suckers for traditional baul songs. The set included "Shohoj Manush", "Jaat Gelo", "Deho Ghori". He sang one of his too, and that was a hit too with the chorus' lines striking everyone's hearts... "ei ki premer protidan?" :)
After this was Black's turn. And yes, Bacchu came on with them. But what pursued was noisy and incomprehensible. They played together on the song "Rhode and Blues", and it was just badly mixed... the rampant guitar solos were not decipherable and the bass was too much.. it was not good. The other songs Black played by themselves, and really, it was like watching them for the first time. Black is a really talented and innovative band, and they have the creativity to keep their live shows attractive, but only if they stop signing up for 2 3 shows in a day!!! They should take their time and concentrate on quality.
After their set was over... Tahsan stayed on. This was to be the transition from Black to LRB. He started his rendition of LRB's Cholo Bodley Jai, with a grand piano sound... that sounded really gooood. Bacchu joined in later and put in a solo with a tone heavy on delay... nice. then slowly the whole band came on and after the song Tahsan left. LRB stayed on to play theirs. It went well... usual LRB stuff.
What can i say! i am tired of typing at the moment.

Whoa! This CD is filled with versatility and intricacies we are used to getting only from the world outside our land. Its a very nice collection of songs... except for a lil rap by a lil T, i like most of it (then again i am not much of a rap person). I wish the producers and the distributors will seriously think of publicizing this album. It will be their loss otherwise, this is the kind of an album that can create or redefine the 'storms' that take place in a record store. I am talking Videos, sending copies to international markets, especially Britain where there is a large following of electronic and especially asian electronic music.

Since i had to go to the bank today... with new cash in our hands (me and my homie fuad) tht we'd try out the new A&W shop in Gulshan. Again, the pictures of juicy burgers graced us and raised our hopes, plus there was root beer... aha.. pretty cool. The prices at first sight are pretty high.. and after we selected we were slammed with the sad fact that the high price on the menu was excluding the VAT! well... still no hard grudges... but when the food finally arrived! pffff... the burger was so small! the fries were good, the burger was fine... but the size just put me off... especially the thinness of the patties! like salami! in the end it was the jar of root beer that filled our tummies.
Also the people working there were taught to speak in english, explain the menus and make suggestions.. and all in english.. but they were not taught to be moderate... hearing "Thank you sir" when asking for a tissue/napkin is not really appropriate! i just heard too many thank you's in one day there!!!!
