One of the new faces on the billboards have been Dave Whatmore our cric coach. He has a tremendous reputation for really lifting teams up from nothing to glory. First his mug was on the ads for Standard Chartered Banks. This bank has probably the most number of ATMs booths in the city. Yet today i saw him in an ad for Brac Bank's ATM systems! and beside the chubby figure of his holding an atm card were the words:

WHAT MORE?

:))

While coming to work today on a three wheeled baby taxi now called 'CNG' (I wonder now why we didn't call them 'Petrol' before), I was looking out to my left, watching the road pass by. Suddenly, i saw out of a white car a lil girl (10/11) who stuck out her middle fingers of both hands (the 'f u' sign!) and pointed to me! Her face showed signs of amusement and fear. I could tell by this that this was her idea of a prank. I guess the kids now have moved on from mukh bhengchani (making faces) and jibba dekhano (sticking the tongue out). The car had momentarily stopped in front of my cng for a while when i wondered whether i should walk upto that car and tell the people in the front seat what the naughty lil girl in tha back was upto. Then i thot its better to let her have her fun for now and people usually grow out of it. They do right?

This is the name of a movie director. I saw Panic Room last night, which long ago i refused to see under the assumption that it will be the typical thriller with sprinkles of nonsense. But since I found out that David Fincher is the director, i got interested again in this movie. And I think i liked it, it was a well made movie. I really liked his previous works (and definitely more than Panic Room since the stories were much better then): Fight Club and Seven.

And I still haven't forgotten some of the dialogue from Fight Club:
Tyler Durden: "We are the all dancing and all singing crap of this world"

taking advantage of the one day break tomorrow (Buddha-Purnima), me and Amit are going to trek across the hills of Uttora looking for vacant apartments that will allow the cursed of the menfolk - the bachelors! apparently these are the rowdy ones, and will always dirty the house and break the sinks! I am thinking of whethere or not to ask my old landlord to write me a letter of recommendation! He is very fond of us since we are mostly never in the house! So none of the fears that other landlords hold, were real for him. Plus none of us ever tried to sit on the sinks (I can't imagine how that ever happened to that poor lady who had this fear!).

This also got me thinking, that we (me and my family in Chittagong), we moved a lot of times while i was in school. Twice within Agrabad, and then to Shugondha and now to the other end of town in South Halishahar! Then I proved to be better at it.. when i left Chittagong ... first to Dhaka, then to Malaysia, and then within Malaysia, I stayed in four different houses in my four years there. This one-house-one-year policy seems to be what stayed as i look back at my stay here in Dhaka to this day! hmmmmm... true... Moghbazar - Mirpur -Uttora. Now I'll be changing houses again, but i dare not leave Uttora.. its the nicest place in Dhaka to me.

Wht good is it to make education compulsory, if you are going to teach jack?
Why is basic education not similar for all? if you want to achieve equality, why not start from education?

Seems like chain reaction is how we were bound/doomed to operate! Anything India or someone else does, we follow, when there are enough brains or brawns to have been the originator.

Recently, Close-up has started a campaign to look for talented singers. But just after the wave of 'The Indian Idol' has swept over us. The 'The xxxx Idol' is a licensed show belonging... i donno probably to Simon Fuller or his company... or whoever. Even though India had similar contests running on some of its channels, the 'idol' proved a bigger hit. The difference probably was the mass voting that was allowed on the 'idol' show, and its marketing. Anyways, that show was a massive hit here too, and i know people just wished they could vote for 'Rahul' or 'Abhijeet' or 'Sana'. And now that an end has been brought to that, Close-Up has launched its own show. Its own ...verrrry similar ...show. Why now? Whatever they may say in self defence, i'd like to say that i would have very much liked to have seen this hunt on tv before I saw the 'idol' show.

Benson and Hedges had a hunt like this. It was called Benson and Hedges Star Search. Consider that, and add proper tv coverage (I mention 'proper' becuase they did air lil half songs from the contest after it was over)* and you would have had something like the '' show 2/3 years back! But this search has over the past years lost all its credibility with reports of nepotism and other corruption.

Another thing that bothers me, are the music production houses that do not bother making music videos! And when they do make it they sell it on CD or distribute it with their sold audio CDs! ARE THEY $%*#$$Q%!$% kidding me?! They missed the whole point of making videos to promote songs and artists. A video should be made and aired before the actual CD hits the market or when it just has! While they ignore this fact, they are releasing the CDs (I frankly don see the point of releasing such products if they aren't going to market it!) and no body other than friends and family know about it. Word gets spread by word of mouth. And you have ads on print! BUT, I also do hope that one day if we do figure out why to make videos and why to make music, good music, we dont get sexed up like the indian media. I watch the paki music channel The Music and it gives me a lot of peace... i hope we can retain sanity at the end of the day.

*Sometimes i get the feeling that our tv channels operate just for airing adverts.

Arnab: A member of the band Bangla, and probably more famous for his song "Shey je boshey achey" from the natok 'offbeat' (and which everyone thought was done by Black, a phenomenon that escapes me).

His album titled "Chaina bhabish" is out.

'Purbachol' is mostly a village now. Direction? Watch out for the road that has a crowded entrance, crowded with street peddlars, and (porbably illegally built) shops. Has a gate over it which promises a beautiful city. Its right after the Khilkhet overbridge if you are coming from the Uttora side. Follow that narrow road for 9 miles and you shall be there. Here are the photos from a drive on that road this friday.

I just had a weird wish to join 'The Three Ninjas' and be on their adventures and go 'ayaaa' in the face of the bad people. hmmmm.

OTher than that ... work has been going on sooo slowly. I been coding on a simple thing for three days. Maybe its not sooo simple after all. Mixed the old with the new, discarded some of the old. Working from scratch is probably easier than modifying stuff.

"Anywhere the wind blows ..doesn't really matter.
Because I'm easy come ...easy go, little high ...little low"

The weather is pretty gloomy today... and I was listening to a little compilation I made for myself of blues music. Then Johnny Lang's 'Look out my window' kept ringing in my head since it kept saying "Look out my window.. is it still raining?". I am sitting right in front of the window in my office from where i can see the trees swaying in the strong winds outside! So it made good sense that this song should stick in my head. But, somehow i remembered "Thunder flash of lightning very very frightening..." of Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. And now the different portions of this song (since i can't recall the whole of it.. or the exact sequence of it... ) are whats playing on Radio Tanm.

Recently we took a trip to cox's Bazaar courtesy of our office. I was pretty skeptical about it ending well.. but i was wrong. It went fine and we all had a lot of fun. We stayed two days in a big hotel named Sea Gull and enjoyed their private beach. The waves on those two days were massive, and we really drained out all our energy by wrestling with it. The third day we shifted to a cheaper hotel and headed out with two vehicles to see Himchori and Inani. Everyone returned the next day to Dhaka ...well almost everyone. I went to Chittagong to see familia, and two others did the same to see their chacha and fupis. The whole thing is also on four hours of video tape, but now i need to figure out a way to get it onto CD. I miss the beach.
